خلاصۃ التجارب

Hakim Baha’ al-Dawla Nurbakhshi Razi (d. 1508) A Persian Physician in Noorbakhshi Intellectual History Hakim Baha’ al-Dawla Nurbakhshi Razi was a Persian physician associated with the Nurbakhshiyya Sufi tradition. His principal work, Khulāṣat al-Tajārib (خلاصۃ التجارب), completed around 1501–1502 CE, is an important source for the history of Persian clinical medicine. It combines medical theory, clinical observations and therapeutic practices, reflecting the influence of earlier Greek and Persian medical authorities. His descriptions of epidemics in Herat and Rey, including persistent coughing, vomiting and severe complications, have attracted scholarly attention as early accounts of illnesses consistent with whooping cough. These records make him a significant historical observer of epidemic disease, although claims that he provided the world’s first accurate description require further evidence. Baha’ al-Dawla’s references to his father, Shah Qasim Nurbakhsh, and his brother, Shah Shams al-Din, also associated with medicine, offer insight into the intellectual environment of the Nurbakhshiyya. His legacy therefore connects Persian medical history with Noorbakhshi scholarly heritage. For ICONS, his writings merit further study through manuscript identification, catalogue verification and critical historical research. His significance rests on documented medical contributions and his place in Noorbakhshi intellectual history, rather than unverified claims of priority.
